INFO:
Born in April 1933 in Ireland, Michael Hayes—known affectionately as Mickey—embarked on a journey that would see him become a legend of the fairground boxing scene. By the age of seventeen, his family had relocated to the outskirts of West London, where Mickey discovered his passion for the sport. For over two decades, Mickey traveled across southern England, fighting in fairground booths with unmatched frequency. At his peak, he fought between five and ten bouts a week, at one point holding the record for an astonishing fifteen bouts in a single day—a record that would later be surpassed by another boxer who managed eighteen. Over his long career, Mickey fought in an estimated 4,500 bouts, a testament to his grit and resilience. Mickey's opponents were a mix of amateur and professional boxers, many of whom traveled with the fairgrounds or joined occasional bouts. This mix raised the quality of the fights and made for spectacular shows. Among the professionals he faced were Sid Cain and Joe Somerville, both of whom he fought over 500 times each. These rivalries became the stuff of fairground legend. However, boxing in the booths was about more than just skill; it was also about entertainment. Mickey understood the importance of showmanship and sometimes had to take a fall to stir up the crowd and keep the atmosphere electric. He also participated in numerous unlicensed fights, adding to his reputation as a fearless competitor. Outside the ring, Mickey had a softer side. He played the accordion and the piano in Irish pubs around London, bringing joy to those who knew him beyond the boxing world. Mickey Hayes passed away on January 14, 2023, at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy as a true fairground fighter and a beloved musician. pc credit- Ritchie Hughes
